Travel Tips For Your Teeth

Going on a summer vacation? Here are 4 ways to keep your mouth healthy while you are away from home:

#1 Plan ahead and pack the essentials. How can you hope to stay consistentent with your dental care on your trip if you do not pack for success? To be prepared, it's a good idea to bring the following:

  • Toothbrush

  • Toothpaste

  • Floss

  • Mouthwash

  • Chewing gum (sugarless and ADA approved)

  • Water and/or water container

#2 Care for your toothbrush. When traveling, cover your toothbrush using either a portable toothbrush cap or a travel toothbrush cover. However, do not keep the toothbrush in these travel containers for extended amounts of times, as this becomes an opportunity for bacteria to buildup. #3 Stay hydrated. Hydration has several health benefits, including improved dental hygiene. Drinking water helps to wash away remnants of food and to minimize risk of cavity-causing bacteria that can wear away the enamel in the mouth.

Also, drinking water on a regular basis helps to sustain a constant, optimal production of salvia within the mouth. Saliva helps to clear away leftover debris from food in your mouth.

But, keep in mind, depending on where your vacation spot is located, water cleanliness may be compromised, so if this is the case, use bottled water. Clean water is not only important for proper teeth cleaning, but also disease-prevention, so make sure you do your research on your travel destination.

#4 Don’t let your routine slip. Proper brushing, flossing, and rinsing is key to your dental health. Try not to let your travels get in the way of this priority. If you happen to let your dental routine slip here or there while traveling, do not let this inconsistency linger. Whether you are at home or away, prioritize your dental health.
